December | 2025 The starting line for the holiday season inches up every year. We are in our sprinter shoes; edging into the red ribbon of memories and hopes we carry for the season. Silent Night is echoing through the speakers while nostalgia wraps itself around us like a familiar blanket. We imagine ways we’ll help those in need. We picture ourselves doing crafts with our kids, no matter their age. We reach for that Leave-It-to-Beaver holiday image tucked somewhere in the back of our minds. And yet, we’re so busy keeping up with what everyone else is doing. The idyllic tree. The champagne toasts. The Norman Rockwell Christmas stroll. All the memories we’ve packed into the suitcase of our lives, hoping to recreate them year after year. But January always arrives, and we’re left wishing we’d made time for what truly mattered. Because it isn’t about the Black Friday sales. It isn’t about the mound of presents or the perfect gift. It’s about the moments in between — how we show up for one another, how we show up for our community, how we lead in ways our children (figuratively or metaphorically) will follow. It’s the reminder of what this season is actually about: the pause, the connection, the presence. No matter your faith — or lack of faith — there’s something undeniably magical about lights glowing in the dead of winter. About snow falling outside, warm kitchens inside. About building gingerbread houses, baking cookies, handing them out to neighbors (something I do far too infrequently). These are the memories that stay. Not the perfect Christmas tree on social media. Not the present that delights for a single moment and is forgotten the next. The real gift is the pause. The presence. The ability to hear that familiar nudge in your heart to give the “best possible gift”… and remembering that the best possible gift is simply being there. Putting down your phone. Not taking on too much. Just being with the people you love. Going sledding. Drinking hot chocolate. Stepping fully into a Norman Rockwell moment instead of scrolling through everyone else’s squares. We chase these traditions because they were the times when life would stand still. When what you were doing was all you were doing. You weren’t building a gingerbread house while scrolling under the table. You weren’t sitting at family dinner thinking in Instagram captions. You were just there. Maybe this season, there is one tradition — one event, one moment — you can commit to being 100% present for. Let that be your gift to yourself, and to everyone around you. Because when even one person is splintered in their attention, everyone feels it. Be the one who gathers people back together. Model presence. Model authentic joy. Find something you loved as a child and bring it back — not because it will make a good post, but because it will make a good moment. A good memory. Let your season be filled with joy.
